Make Up Class Policy?

I understand that Sophie Dance does allow make up classes, however they are limited to two per season; to be made up within the season, they do not roll over. Sophie Dance Main Season is ongoing from September to May, while Summer Season is ongoing from July to August.  To attend a make up class I must contact the studio at least a day in advance between 9AM and 5PM to schedule a makeup class. The make-up does not have to be in the same style of dance. I understand that some classes fill up and that makeup classes are subject to availability and NOT GUARANTEED.

Can Parents Stay in Class?

Only in classes ages 2 and under.

OUR POLICY FOR CLASSES WITH KIDS AGES 2-3:

Most 2 year olds have never separated from a parent or nanny when they come to an age 2-3 Y/O dance class at Sophie Dance. Some pre-schools accept children at age 2, but parents leaving comes with up to 6 months of warm-up time in the form of a parent and me class followed by extensive periods of weaning, so expectations that 2 year olds should come in to our classroom leaving “mommy or daddy” behind is unreasonable THOUGH of course we have the cases where this happens.

In many 2 year old cases where the child is comfortable enough to leave “mom” in the other room they are likely at least 2.5 years old. There is extensive brain development that happens in those 6 months giving the children the comprehension to understand “mommy” is just in the other room, not leaving them forever. Prior to that brain development some 2 years old can’t understand their parent is simply outside the room. At Sophie Dance we really want to respect this notion.

Separation anxiety peaks between 2 and 2.5 so, again, we want to honor that not all children are ready to be alone with a teacher at that time.

In our age 2-3 Y/O classes parents are WELCOME to come into the classroom WITH the side note that the goal is for parents to not be in the room so the teacher can connect with the students better. We are not in a position to transition children, so anyone under class age 3-4 years of age, if need be, can have a parent accompany them inside the room. This will mean some dancers are fine dancing with just the teacher (and that is the goal, so YEAH!) and some are outside.

In our age 3-4 Y/O classes all parents must wait outside of the classroom AFTER the first class. Which means that parents are allowed only in the FIRST CLASS if they wish, so they can see the wonderful things we do.

I know there are cases when 2 year olds ask why their mommy is not in the room if others are, but to be honest in all of my experience that is so few kids, and very rare. Kids that are ready to be without mom just are, and can enjoy their time and attention from their teacher. And if they need mom too that is fine too of course!
